Grant stared at the body of the British officer, imagining how it happened.

“Hey, my tank's run dry,” the private could've said, banging at the window, maybe laughing at the tank being dry when he wasn't.

“Sorry. Can't spare the petrol.”

Something set off the private, and the officer was dead. The war was over, and here was a bullet unnecessarily spent, a life needlessly wasted.

Grant looked back at the jeep, tired, not wanting to deal with this. He reminded himself of the number of points he had accumulated, a wary eye on the pistol in the private's hand.

They emerge from the plane one by one, scared quiet at the first jump, whooping and hollering by the last.

Winters watches Easy Company celebrate earning their jump wings over beer, any actual combat jumps still so far off. Their pants are bloused and spirits are high, the threat of Europe, Africa, or the Pacific still looming in the distance like a storm cloud, but today's accomplishments push it to the backs of their minds.

They're young. They're alive. They're brothers.

With Sobel in charge, though, how many will stay that way? These thoughts keep Winters from enjoying the evening.
