Tuesday Prompt "Symmetry"

Prompt "symmetry" for the drabble challenge at [livejournal.com profile] lostsquee.

I had no idea how to work with this one... Then I opened a blank document and this just...came out.

Desmond
Desmond/Penelope
vague Desmond/Charlie
100 words

+++

The universe self-correcting maintains symmetry, maintains the reflection of how things are and how things are supposed to be. The universe's plan doesn't make allowances for those of men. That's why he's on this island, guarding Charlie from the inevitable, instead of with Pen, dreaming of all the possibilities in their lives. The way Charlie's eyes look when Desmond tells him that he's going to die is the same "you're off your bloody rocker" look Pen would get when he asked why she loved him, and it made his heart ache.

Saving Charlie would mean never having to lose her.

Mmmmm, nice! Very very nice. And you/Desmond are so right, we can make all the plans we want, the Universe is the one with the final say.

Great use of a hard prompt!!

Thanks so much, hun! I thought I wouldn't be able to think of something to write because symmetry is a concept not a thing like the other prompts had been, so it's kinda hit or miss with ideas, but I was glad I found one. :)

Wonderful. You've summed up the dilemma perfectly. Nice use of the prompt. I love the last line. It really shows how important this task is to Desmond and what it represents. Which is why Charlie has to live of course! Hee.

Thank you! I love how these prompts are getting me away from my usual characters... Well, okay, maybe not because Jack's still been in 3 of them and 2 were Jack/Sawyer, but I also did Shannon and now Desmond, so that's something!

It is important to Des, though, because otherwise he doesn't know Charlie and I don't think he'd try so hard if he wasn't trying to constantly fight the universe's agenda.

I know. :( Poor them. I guess Charlie wouldn't be too terrible upset if he died because, well, he'd be dead, but Desmond would be so miserable.

Thanks for commenting!

Oh, I love the way you've tied this into the universe's course correction and Desmond seeing a way to try to offset the hurt of having lost Penny by saving Charlie. Such a great interpretation of the prompt!

Thank you so much! It's a good thing they had that Desmond episode or I would've been CLUELESS about what to do in that prompt. Desmond intrigues me - he needs another episode.

very bittersweet! and a great use of the prompt too, one that should have been obvious but was not until I read this! that is always the sign of a great idea!

Hee, thanks! I don't know where the realization came from to go with this idea, but it definitely more or less wrote itself, and I'm impressed with it for such a little thing. I need to try stream-of-conscious fanficing more often.
