I think my muse is feeling overworked. I tried writing today but all I could get out was 500 words involving Jack and Sawyer.

The kicker? It isn't even slash!

Title: Matter of Trust
Rating: PG-13
Pairing: Jack/Sawyer (not slash, though)
Word Count: 500
Warnings: Spoilers for "The Long Con"
Summary: Drabble. Jack trusts Sawyer.

+++

"I can't believe you ain't mad," Sawyer was shaking his head, hair getting in front of his face as he looked at Jack through the strands. "Can't fuckin' believe it."

Jack twisted around from where he lay on the sofa in the hatch, putting the crossword book down on the coffee table, seeing Sawyer standing behind him, and wondering why the hell he was there. Sawyer hated the hatch, the freakishness of it being on the island, and now he was standing there, expecting Jack to play another game with him. Jack gave in with a heavy sigh. "What am I supposed to be mad about?"

Sawyer sauntered around the sofa, watching Jack watch him until he got to the side Jack wasn't leaning against, plopping down on the cushion and stretching his arms out wide on either side. "You can't be serious, Doc."

"Okay...I'm not mad, and I'm not serious. Why are you here?"

"To find out why you ain't mad. It just don't make any sense."

Jack thought back to the day the raft left, when Sawyer had told him about meeting his father. Sawyer had said that kids were like dogs, and if you knock them around enough, they think they did something to deserve it. Jack had a feeling that Sawyer's brand of wisdom came from personal experience. With Sawyer, though, it seemed like he kept doing things wrong to get knocked around, but no one had been there to care.

"Want me to spell it out for ya?" Sawyer's posture on the couch was reminiscent of the lions in the Serengeti Jack's parents once took him to see as a child, long and lean limbs completely stretched out.

"You want me to be mad about the guns," Jack said, standing up as the timer started to beep. He hated pressing the damn thing, but Locke was yet to show up, so he might as well enter the numbers. He knew Sawyer was following him, and when Jack sat down at the chair in front of the computer, Sawyer leaned against the doorway, watching without paying attention. Jack entered the numbers, hit execute, and turned the chair to face the other man. "If anything, I'm glad. I don't trust Locke with them, and after what almost happened, I don't think I trust myself."

Sawyer's eyebrows were knitted together in obvious disbelief. "But you trust me?"

Jack shrugged, checking the timer and seeing it had only been two minutes. He figured he should have enough time to catch a nap before it started beeping again. Jack stood, heading over to the bedroom. "You've had guns before," he spoke loud enough for Sawyer to hear him. "You haven't actually killed anybody with one yet. I doubt there's cause to worry."

There was silence for a moment, and then Jack heard a very distinct snort coming from down the hall. He smiled at the sound of the muttered "Jackass" before lying down on the bed and closing his eyes.

I really liked this, really nice little piece, I enjoyed it. You totally got the Jack/Sawyer dynamic down here, Sawyer just trying to get Jack's attention, like a little kid, and Jack playing the tired parent. And Jack's observation about Ford wanting to be 'knocked around', I think that's so true, he needs someone to set some boundaries for him and he often looks to Jack to do that. I like how Jack denies him it though, tells him he's okay with Sawyer having the guns, doesn't mind, and then Sawyer goes off sulking. He's so cute in this, so needy.

Sorry your muse is acting up on you but I think it gave you something very nice here. *pets muse* *pets Emily*

Hehe I just reviewed you and you just reviewed me. Talk about synchronicity. Now you gotta go head over to In Admiration and play catch up because, girl, you're missing a lot. ;) It's Jack and Boone's fault my muse is brain dead today. She's like, "Jack/Sawyer? Who?"

Sawyer is totally a little kid pulling on Jack's pant leg going, "Look at me! Look at me! Look at me!" I think he doesn't realize he does it, though.

Re: In Admiration, I know! From the sounds of it Jack and Boone are having fun without me. Well, obviously without me being that I'm not on the island, but you know what I mean. I kept seeing the updates but that stupid Jack/Ford story's been eating my brain. I shall be heading over there in a moment though, I have a little free time before I have to sleep.

Yay for free time! I saw and replied to your reviews already, as you probably noticed by the time you get to this one. I just noticed that that girl (I'm assuming girl) from [livejournal.com profile] jackboone_love commented on your latest Jack/Ford piece. So now you're being stalked too. She hasn't commented to my story yet. For all that harassment, she doesn't seem to care very much about leaving feedback. ;)

Don't let the fact that it's not slash or it's short disuade you from posting..this was damn good. Sometimes the best stories pack a punch with a minimum of words and lack of slash.

I remember one of my favorite all-time stories, slash or not, didn't even have a kiss until the end, and it was just perfection when it happened.

This is great, I wouldn't have wanted you to add anything to it!!

Aw, thanks. I think I'm bummed with this story because it was one of those ideas that I wrote the beginning to, left, and then came back like a month later expecting my muse to still remember where it was going and she just didn't, so it ended up with that. I'm glad you liked it, though. Maybe I'll post it in the comms...eventually.

At least not on the island he hasn't, but then Jack has no reason to know about Shrimp Guy. I'm guessing that that's why his comment was met with a moment of silence.

Noticed your comment about "that girl" and knew instantly who you meant. I thought she seemed a little overzealous too, over on Gem's page.

Love your pic! Damn but the boy is just (as Mal might put it) so very, very pretty. Oh, yeah, and shiny too.

Yeah Jack wouldn't know about that. He knows about the marshal and then when Sawyer had the gun from the Ethan incident through "Outlaws" and then after the S1 finale.

She's, uh, been commenting here and for [livejournal.com profile] _inadmiration a bunch about me reading her story. I haven't done it and I'm hesitant to because I can't go in with a clean opinion if I'm feeling forced.

I have a Boone icon in one of my icon batch posts that says "shiny" on it. Firefly/Lost = ♥.
