This was fantastically heartbreaking. The fact that even after seeing what happened, Starfleet doctors didn't believe the survivors makes it incredible that Jim could ever trust anyone, let alone Bones.

I did however find the technical details a little confusing. Was there a small chip imbedded in his thumb, or a visible tattoo or both?
It didn't detract from my enjoyment of the story, but I am curious.
