And Bones, this vulnerable, almost sheepish? side of him, is not something we are able to see often and it just amplifies how touching this story is.

Serious painkillers, in my experience, bring out different sides of people. So while completely sober there wouldn't be any regret, I think doped up Bones feels like he needs to make excuses for himself since his job and his commitment to it probably started the end of his marriage.
