I think you might be right about Reboot Jim. Certainly at this point in the timeline I suspect his ego is much less wrapped up in being a Captain than TOS Kirk was. I think he'd give up space for love.
In thinking of Bones I kept thinking of an American doctor called Beck Weathers who lost most of both hands to frostbite on Everest in 1996 and went back to medical work - although I think mostly research work - in a modified lab.
