Roe, mentioned Gordon
100 words
Prompt: #115 Devil
His grandmother was a traiteur – she could lay her hands on someone and heal them, taking the evil right out. Eugene Roe didn't have that gift from God, but he couldn't see it doing any good out here. Soldiers got hit by bullets, mortars, grenade shrapnel, even the trees in the frozen hell of Bastogne.
When Gordon was paralyzed, it hadn't been the work of the devil. This was men hurting each other, rendering faith healing useless, no matter how much Roe prayed in his foxhole every morning.
He relied on his Army medic training and hoped it was enough.

Lipton, Speirs
100 words
Prompt: #116 Heaven
The Ardennes, when bathed in dense fog, reminded Lipton of Sunday school illustrations of heaven depicting cherubs watching Earth from above. He hadn't thought heaven would be this cold, though, or so trying on the spirit.
He'd been disappointed with Captain Winters's answer; Easy would be assaulting Foy with Lieutenant Dike in charge.
Lipton had resigned himself to the fact that they were going to die crouched behind a Belgian haystack when out of the mist the lone figure of Lieutenant Speirs came running. Lipton could almost see the flaming sword in the other man's hand as Speirs took over.
