I think I was intending for Bones' need to be all doctorly to override the fear, so that part didn't have any real deeper backstory meaning, but I'm really intrigued by that idea. I was thinking cardiothoracic surgeon, though. I kinda wanted trauma surgeon, but I don't think they'd be sent to do a transplant, even if he is an overachiever that's qualified for both.

My backstory for Jim is that he's ex-military. I was thinking of having him discharged from DADT but then I wasn't sure what that means now that it's been repealed, if those who had been discharged got some sort of apology or something. And I wasn't sure if I wanted this fic to get all into SRS political statements. The only other way to get Jim ex-military, though, is for something really bad and traumatic to have happened to him, and even then he'd be on reserve because it's wicked expensive to train helicopter pilots, so they wouldn't just let him go.

So it could be something like Jim is actually the more damaged one but he's not upfront about it. But the damage hasn't happened yet. So like this fic is more of a prologue when they meet and then Jim goes away, whatever happens that he's discharged or put on reserve, and then him and Bones meet again with marked changes. I just haven't worked out how much time that'll be (like if the Jocelyn and Joanna stuff is happening in between). Although what I've written here is already inconsistent with my original timeline.

Supply closet sex should totally happen though.
