Winters/Nixon
100 words
Prompt: #117 Hell
The landscape is littered with fire and the dead. Nixon knows immediately that the DZ is wrong. They missed by so much he'd been dropped into Hell.
He gets his bearings and moves on, rifle at the ready. Soldiers join up; none of them are Dick, but none of the bodies they pass are, either.
It's daylight when Nixon reaches battalion's staging area, and he's still on edge. Then he spots Lieutenant Winters, alive and whole, and everything shifts.
“Going my way?” he asks, offering a hand and a smile.
“Sure,” Dick replies, and it's all Nix needs to hear.

Nixon, Winters
100 words
Prompt: #118 Desolate
Ten months since D-Day and this was the most desolate place they'd seen.
Walking wounded was a familiar state, one boasted of by the soldiers. Never before had they seen walking dead, these innocents made the scapegoat of Hitler's rage.
“I thought you weren't drinking the local.” Dick's tone wasn't accusatory.
“Yeah, well...” Nixon had new feelings to drown. With that last jump, the demotion, and the divorce, he'd felt like the world was out to get him. Now he felt ashamed, petty, and surprisingly grateful to those Nazi bastards for showing him that life could be so much worse.
