Title: The Greater Good
Rating: NC-17
Pairings: Kirk/McCoy, Sulu/Chekov, Spock/Uhura
Word Count: 29,020
Warnings: sex, angst (specifically in the context of depression and PTSD), medical and military stuff that should be read with suspended disbelief, lab rats (including non-graphic description of humane euthanasia), underage drinking (though Chekov argues that he's legal in Russia), and minor character (OC and canon) deaths
Summary: Doctor Leonard McCoy thinks he's getting by, working as both a surgeon and a researcher at UCSF Medical Center. A chance encounter with Lieutenant Jim Kirk - who's changed since they first met five years before, and not for the better - forces Leonard to face reality about his own situation while trying to keep Jim from heading down the same path.

Author's Notes: Thanks to [ profile] blcwriter for all the hand-holding and coaxing, [ profile] caitri for resorting to bribery to see this thing finished (I haven't forgotten!), [ profile] flyingmachine for beta reading, and all the people who commented on the snippet I posted at the end of December (especially [ profile] wolf_naked for leaving the original prompt this was inspired by even if I don't actually follow it), and the [ profile] au_bigbang challenge for forcing me to finish this fic instead of letting it hang around on my hard-drive for an untold amount of time.

Part 1 - Part 2 - Part 3 - Part 4 - Part 5 - Part 6

Accompanying art for the story (including the city headers seen in the story) was done by [ profile] thereshedances, so make sure to check it out here!

1. Detlef Schrempf (Band of Horses)
The town is gonna talk, but these people do not
See things through to the very minimal
But what's it gonna cost to be gone?

2. You are a Tourist (Death Cab for Cutie)
'Cause when you find yourself the villain
In the story you have written, it's plain to see
That sometimes the best intentions
Are in need of redemption
Would you agree?
If so please show me

3. Rusted Wheel (Silversun Pickups)
I can tell it's summer from the
Size of the bugs that fly through my window
Flying through my window
Rusted wheel planted still
Rusted wheel can't move on

4. Smokers Outside the Hospital Doors (Editors)
I can't shake this feeling I've got
My dirty hands, have I been in the wars?
The saddest thing that I'd ever seen
Were smokers outside the hospital doors
Someone turn me around
Can I start this again?

5. The Modern Leper (Frightened Rabbit)
I am ill but I'm not dead
And I don't know which of those I'd prefer
Because that limb which I have lost
It was the only thing holding me up

6. The Wolves (Bon Iver)
Someday my pain, someday my pain
Will mark you
Harness your blame, harness your blame
And walk through

7. Shelter (The xx)
Maybe I had said something that was wrong
Can I make it better with the lights turned on?

8. Separator (Radiohead)
Like I'm falling out of bed
From a long and weary dream
Finally I'm free of all the weight I've been carrying

9. Cheer Up, Boys (Foo Fighters)
Elementary, I solved them all
All your mysteries
Settle down and in good time
We can solve all mine

10. Falling Away with You (Muse)
All of the love we left behind
Watching the flashbacks intertwine
Memories I will never find
So I'll love whatever you become
And forget the restless things we've done
I think our lives have just begun

11. Three Rounds and a Sound (Blind Pilot)
Soil and six feet under
Killed just like we were
Before you knew you'd know me
And you know me

12. Feel the Tide (Mumford & Sons)
But you and I, now, we can be all right
Just hold on to what we know is true
You and I, now, though it's cold inside
Feel the tide turning

I'm so glad I spent the evening reading this instead of staring at my own blank word doc in frustration. I love AUs, and this is one of the best that I've read. It's such a beautiful story, with a great mix and art to go with it. *hugs this fic* Thank you for this wonderful story. :)
